.... Dawlish community working together to SAVE SANDY LANE recreation and leisure facilities....

The questions Tesco's wouldn't answer...

We've asked them face to face, we've asked them by email.  They held a consultation - but it seemed that as soon as anyone asked a tricky question they were accused of being "hostile".  We emailed them to ask for questions but they called us "stalkers" and threatened legal action - just because we wanted some answers!  So much for consulting with us.   If this is how they treat people that they want to get on-side, imagine having them as neighbours!

*** SHOCK HORROR:  Just in - Tesco "apology"!   Scroll to bottom of the list to see who they blame for their behaviour!  (guess what - it wasn't their fault!!!)

The question

Tesco's say:

How many shoppers will the store cater for?

"I have no option other than to ask my IT department to bar your emails and to forward all your correspondance to my lawyer who will seek to take action under the protection from harassment act."

Tesco's leaflet says "....the Recreation Ground, which will be left alone"

Obviously it will NOT be left alone if Tesco's can help it. Tesco's literature and displays show they plan to build ON the recreation ground, specifically on the old hockey pitch, behind the football pitch. Although a number of people heard you refer to it as "waste land". Did Tesco's ever visit the site?

"I have no option other than to ask my IT department to bar your emails and to forward all your correspondance to my lawyer who will seek to take action under the protection from harassment act."

Tesco's leaflet says: "Will it be in the town....."?

And answers itself with

"YES...The local council want any new supermarket as close as possible to the town centre"

... exactly who are you referring to when you say "the local council"? Teignbridge? Dawlish Town Council? Devon County Council? And when did you ask for their opinion, and their permission to publish it?

"I have no option other than to ask my IT department to bar your emails and to forward all your correspondance to my lawyer who will seek to take action under the protection from harassment act."

Isn't it asking for accidents to site a supermarket right next door to a youth centre and skate park, with all the lorries, deliveries and shoppers' cars?

"you're being very hostile"

in the leaflet, point 10, you say "your views count"? Well if people still have questions, they obviously need them answering in order to formulate a view that you can count.

"I have no option other than to ask my IT department to bar your emails and to forward all your correspondance to my lawyer who will seek to take action under the protection from harassment act."

Although Tesco are claiming that they are not seeking to develop the recreation ground the published aerial view clearly shows that this is not the case.  The view indicates that the building and carpark proposed by Tesco would in fact take over the whole of the current football ground as well as the hockey pitch.  This is undoubtedly part of the recreation ground (as was, in fact, the area leased by the football club), and a much larger area than we had been led to believe.  So what is the true picture please?

I would also like to ask why, with Tesco's enormous resources, Tesco have not seen fit to research alternative sites and present Dawlish with more than one option.  To present us with this proposal, and this proposal only, has created a profound resentment and mistrust in many people who would otherwise have been far more measured in their response to your proposition to build a store in Dawlish.

The leaflet drop that happened today to ‘a few thousand homes’ in the Dawlish area, appears to have left out my house. You may think that this is a strange issue to raise with you, as I was more than capable of coming along and voting. However, a good proportion of Dawlish’s population are elderly, and may not be able to vote ‘on foot’.  The area that appears to have been left out of the leaflet drop includes Exeter Road

(with my house backing onto the football pitch). Surely you can understand my cynicism that the leaflet drop was selective in your favour.

In the press you invited people to come and discuss the use of the ‘Football Club’. This is very misleading, as the term ‘Football Club’ to the locals, is the clubhouse, which resides on the car park at Sandy Lane. I feel that this has been very misleading.

The gentleman assured me that there are no plans to buy any houses on Exeter Road

and develop a roundabout in its place- he stated that if it was not on the drawn plan, then it was not going to happen. However, your written literature states that ‘the junction of Exeter Road and Sandy Lane will have signals to ensure safe crossing…’ This is not on the drawing, which immediately instils distrust in the Tesco representative.

I have two children- one who suffers with asthma; they have both raised concerns regarding the noise and the ‘smell’ of the cars. A row of trees will not barricade this. I am very concerned that the fumes will exacerbate my child’s asthma.

There will be increased traffic to the Exeter Road;

this is extremely busy already and at times I have had to wait a number of minutes to pull out of my drive. There have been 2 occasions where I have had near misses due to the speed and nature of this road. I know that you will say that traffic lights will slow the traffic down, but I do not believe that this will ease my problem of pulling out, especially with the increased traffic .

The proposed car park (for 259 cars?!!) will back on to my garden, with people reversing into car parking spaces the car fumes will be directed into my garden. This is a grave concern to me as I have developed a garden to attract wildlife (we have frogs, hedgehogs and numerous different birds- as well as badgers).  This area is also currently being developed into a chicken coop, in which I am expecting to produce organic eggs

There is a wonderful play park and a proposed skating park in the area, and I worry that with the increased traffic this will become a ‘hot spot’ for accidents. I can see that there is a zebra crossing on one side- I can only presume that there is not one near the Blackdown Centre otherwise it would be on the drawn plan (as discussed with the Tesco Representative).

From email sent 7/12/07 and chased up again 19/12/07, to Sir Chris Charles.

With reference to speaking to you this afternoon, you said that you would find out and let me know the approximate number of cars travelling in and out of the site daily and also the numbers of delivery and other service vehicles using Sandy Lane on a daily basis.

I spoke to Melanie and she did not know,  but the planners at Tesco must have some idea of the sort of level of business they expect to  do based on the development of similar stores throughout the country.

This matter must have been discussed at some level with the highways people as it is very relevant and the traffic flow along Exeter  Road is already substantial duing the season.

I do not think the store's opening hours were discussed and whether there would be traffic movements during the evening, night time or early mornings  and perhaps you would clarify this point.

Did you ask anyone a question at the consultation, or later by post or email?   What answers did you get?  Send them in and we'll put them up!

Dear Mr (or Ms) Tesco's.  We know you crawl all over this site, and we'd hate you to feel left out - so in the interest of fair play (remember that?) we'd love love love you to give us the answers.  Send them in and we'll put them on the site.

*** STOP PRESS... SHOCK NEWS... STOP PRESS...***

Here's that "apology"!!!!!

One of our members got this today (22nd Feb). A response to his complaint about Mel C & her merry band!

"I have looked into what happened on 6/7 December. Where strong feelings are displayed it is easy for emotions to come to the surface and it seems to me that this may have been the case on this occasion and on both sides. Melanie Chiswell is a senior and respected member of my team and, it is true to say, that she did face some considerable personal animosity demonstrated against her at the time and subsequently. I am sorry if the behaviour of a minority of people affected my team's approach to the many other people who came along to engage in a calm and constructive manner"

Adam Jackson, Public Policy Director, Tesco, Cheshunt.

"You Say"

"Nice that they are blaming the community!!!!!  And even though they acknowledge that their "side" was to blame, and they want to pass the blame to the community.  They have certainly not apologised for their team's actions - instead only saying that the community's approach had affected the Tesco's team's approach.  Obviously they expected a welcome response from the people from whom they are attempting to steal leisure and recreation facilities!!!!!"

"You'd think that with Tesco's £billions they'd have managed to give their poor team a little training"
